Abstract

The decline of integrity, weak professionalism, and the growing dominance of materialistic orientation in contemporary economic activities highlight the importance of reexamining work ethic from a Qur’anic perspective. This study aims to analyze the construction of the Qur’anic work ethic and explain its position as the normative foundation of Islamic economic ethics. This research is a qualitative descriptive library study employing a thematic Qur’anic exegesis (tafsīr maudū‘ī) approach with linguistic and juristic perspectives. Primary sources consist of the Qur’an and classical as well as contemporary exegetical works, while secondary sources include scholarly journals, academic books, and relevant Islamic literature. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed using content analysis involving identification, classification, interpretation, and conceptual synthesis. The findings reveal that the Qur’anic work ethic is constructed upon four principal values: ‘amal ṣāliḥ (righteous and productive action), amanah (trustworthiness), ihsan (excellence), and istiqāmah (steadfast consistency). These values form the ethical foundation of Islamic economics by integrating spiritual orientation, economic productivity, accountability, and social welfare. This study concludes that the Qur’anic work ethic remains highly relevant as a moral framework for fostering honest, professional, and socially responsible economic behavior.
