Publishing Process

Al-Azhar Islamic Law Review (AILREV) follows a structured editorial and peer-review process to maintain the quality, integrity, relevance, and scholarly contribution of published articles.

AILREV is published twice a year:

June and December

Stage 1 — Manuscript Submission

Authors submit manuscripts through the official online submission system of AILREV.

Submitted manuscripts must comply with:

  • the journal's focus and scope;
  • author guidelines;
  • manuscript template;
  • academic writing standards;
  • citation and referencing requirements; and
  • publication ethics requirements.

Stage 2 — Initial Editorial Screening

Each submitted manuscript undergoes an initial editorial assessment.

The editors assess:

  1. compatibility with the journal's scope;
  2. originality and scholarly relevance;
  3. compliance with the manuscript template;
  4. completeness of the submission;
  5. basic methodological and argumentative quality;
  6. citation and reference adequacy; and
  7. potential ethical or publication-integrity concerns.

Manuscripts that do not satisfy the basic editorial requirements may be returned to the authors for improvement or rejected at this stage.

Stage 3 — Similarity and Research Integrity Screening

Manuscripts may undergo similarity screening and editorial checks for potential publication misconduct.

The similarity assessment serves as an editorial screening instrument. The final assessment considers the context and nature of identified similarities rather than relying solely on a numerical similarity percentage.

Stage 4 — Peer Review

Manuscripts that pass the initial editorial assessment are sent to qualified peer reviewers whose expertise corresponds to the subject of the manuscript.

Reviewers assess, among other aspects:

  1. originality;
  2. relevance;
  3. theoretical or conceptual foundation;
  4. research design and methodology;
  5. quality of legal reasoning or empirical evidence;
  6. analysis and interpretation;
  7. contribution to the field;
  8. clarity of presentation;
  9. quality of references; and
  10. ethical compliance.

Catatan editorial: model peer review seperti double-anonymous peer review sebaiknya dicantumkan hanya apabila memang merupakan praktik resmi AILREV. Jangan mencantumkan model tersebut jika belum ditetapkan dan diterapkan secara konsisten dalam OJS.

Stage 5 — Editorial Decision

Based on reviewer recommendations and editorial assessment, a manuscript may receive one of the following decisions:

  • Accept
  • Minor Revision
  • Major Revision
  • Reject

Reviewer recommendations constitute an important part of the editorial process, while the final editorial decision remains the responsibility of the editors.

Stage 6 — Revision

When revisions are required, authors must revise the manuscript according to the comments provided by reviewers and editors.

Authors should provide an appropriate response to substantive reviewer comments and identify the revisions made to the manuscript.

A revised manuscript may be returned to reviewers when necessary.

Stage 7 — Final Acceptance

A manuscript is formally accepted after the editors determine that:

  1. the required revisions have been adequately addressed;
  2. the manuscript meets the journal's academic standards;
  3. the manuscript complies with the journal's editorial requirements; and
  4. there are no unresolved publication-ethics concerns.

Stage 8 — Copyediting and Production

Accepted manuscripts undergo editorial preparation, which may include:

  • language and style checking;
  • citation and reference checking;
  • formatting;
  • metadata verification;
  • author and affiliation verification; and
  • final proofreading.

Authors may be asked to verify the final version before publication.

Stage 9 — Publication

The final article is published online as part of the appropriate issue of AILREV.

AILREV is published bi-annually:

June and December

The journal provides immediate open access to published content.

Stage 10 — Post-Publication

After publication, AILREV maintains the integrity of the scholarly record.

Where necessary, the journal may publish:

  • corrections;
  • expressions of concern;
  • retractions; or
  • other appropriate editorial notices.

The journal may also respond to substantiated post-publication concerns in accordance with its publication-ethics procedures.
